THE TRAMWAY OF VALENCIA IS ENLARGED
COSTA MARTINEZ VERDU
Valencia underground has started the enlargment of the line 4 of the tramway that will link the stop station of Empalme (the old end of the line) with the TV channel of Valencia (Channel 9), through a route with a reserved platform, with 2.362 metres of double line, that will cover the zones with aconsiderable demand, such as the national health clinic, the San Juan square , the television center and the universitarian campus of the Burjassot population.

The new stretch of the tramway have five stops: The Farm, Sant Joan, Campus, Vicent Andrés Esteller and TVV. These stops have glass roofs and urban forniture with the same characteristics as the rest of the stops of the line.
The starting of this new stretch contributes to compensate the travellers flux that is registered nowadays in rush hours, which has a predominant east orientation, given that the politecnic university, the new campus of the literary university, is nowdays the main point of destiny of the just mentioned line.
The last year, the success and the acceptation achieved by this pioneer way of transport here in Spain, was summarized in 3.884.508 travellers. It is probable that the new stretch increases the number of travellers until achieving the 930.000 travellers every year. To atend the demand that the tramway line has generated, Valencia Underground will receive, during the present year, four new unities to guarantee the technologic continuity and the compatibility of the Siemens-Duewag, the company under which the lisence, the 21 tramways that circulate in the just mentioned line, were cosnstructed. In rush hours, once the new four unities circulate in this line, this will has a frequency of one tramway every four minutes.

The tramway of the line 4 can carry 190 travellers with 65 seats. One of the main characteristics is his first floor, which permits the access of the elders and of people with reduced physical capacities. In the interior, there are room for bars of subjection and solicitated switchs to stop the tramway, together with electric open doors.
All the tramways are equipied with climatization systems, megaphony and electronic indicators which inform to the travellers of the next stop and of the tramway' s destiny.
The manager equipment control, specially sophisticated, is making a continous checking of the state of all the equipes of the tramway (traction, opening and closing of the doors, acondicionate air and blakes...), and if some perturbation is detected it advises through a display, that informs of the nature of the break and of the operations to make. In the same way, as the unities of the underground, the tramways are permanently communicated with the manager center of the Valencia Underground, through a radiotelephone system.
The Valencia tramway goes over the squares and the famous farms of Valencia.

It has already begun the new enlargement works to near the tramway to the International
Trade Show of Valencia. This new stretch will have 785 metres long in double
line.
This new trains, the same as their antecesors, are made by an only car with
two conduction cabins and two diesel traction motors, that go at 120 km/h and
can carry 59 travellers. Not only because of their capacity, but because of
their technic capacity, the swift train is a very good way of transport for
strech of low demand travellers and for the ones that have many intermediate
stops.
The train is provided with climatization, room for the reduced movility people,
ambiental music, stops announced and messages of the maquinist to the travellers
trough the megaphony, exterior teleindicators, stop adviser, zones for the bycicles
and W.C.
